SERB Fund for Industrial Research Engagement (SERB- FIRE): Intel Relevant Research Problems (IRRP) – Request for Proposals (RFP)
1. Objective
The Scheme for funding Industry Relevant R&D (IRRD) of SERB aims to utilize the expertise available in academic institutions and national laboratories (“academic partners”) to solve industry specific problems for larger benefit of society. The Program titled ‘Fund for Industrial Research Engagement (FIRE)’ under IRRD supports ideas that address well-defined problems of industrial relevance in project mode. SERB signed partnership agreements with a few selected industries including Intel Technology India Private Limited (Intel India). Funding support by SERB and Intel India shall be on equal basis of 1:1 ratio for projects jointly executed by academic partners and Intel India under the program.
2. Thrust R&D areas
(i) Next-generation AI/ML technologies for autonomous systems.
(ii) Center for CPU-Centric Server Systems (C3S2).
(iii) Computational approach in molecular pathway understanding for multiple convergent diseases using multimodal biological network and knowledge graph-based analysis.
(iv) Integrative Proteomic and Imaging based Computational Playbook to Develop Novel Antiviral Therapeutics that Target Host Proteins involved in Single-Stranded RNA Virus Replication.
(v) Development of Novel Machine Learning Framework for Medical Images by replicating Radiologist Cognition.
(vi) Graphene- Based Integrated Heat spreader with thermal conductivity>3000W/m-K.
(vii) Automated reasoning assisted Formal Verification.
(viii) Making the laptop the teachers aid of choice in the classroom of the future.
(ix) Personalization of PC (P2C): User behaviour data assisted next generation PC experience for confidential and secured personal computing.
(x) Client devices user experience enhancements through telemetry and data analytics.
3. Who can apply
(i) Applicants [Principal Investigator (PI) and / or Co-Principal Investigator(s) (Co-PI(s))] should be Indian citizens. Foreign nationals (including OCI and NRI) are also eligible to apply provided they fulfil the eligibility criteria notified by SERB (SERB Funding Guidelines for foreign nationals dated 27th Oct 2016) and The Gazette of India Notification of Ministry of Home Affairs vide. S.O. 1050(E) dated 4th March 2021 in respect of OCIs.
(ii) The applicant(s) must hold a regular academic/research position in a recognized academic institution or national laboratory or in any other recognized R & D institution in India with at least 3 years of service remaining.
4. Guidelines
(i) An applicant is eligible to apply only one proposal during a call (as a PI or Co-PI).
(ii) Not more than one project is allowed at any given time. However, projects under the program SERB-FIRE are exempted from this category. The PI is encouraged to apply for another project six months prior to the completion of the project.
(iii) Proposals submitted must be original in ideation and content. Plagiarism in any form will not be acceptable. All submitted proposals might be subjected to a third-party similarity check and proposals are liable to be rejected if found plagiarised. Any text taken verbatim from other source needs to be identified using quotation marks and proper reference. Applicants are requested to pre-check their proposals for plagiarism before uploading.
(iv) Selected applicants should engage a co-PI from the industry concerned before initiating the project. The participating industry will support the Principal Investigators and/or the research team of the Individual Projects in leveraging the strategic and technical expertise of the industry in carrying out the research activities and achieve the milestones.
(v) Funding will be provided normally for a period of two years. The research grant will encompass normal budget heads, apart from an overhead grant.
(vi) All the rights, duties and obligations pertaining to any intellectual property, profit sharing/royalty and related aspects shall be discussed and agreed separately with the participating Academic Institutes and Industry in the Individual Agreements. A copy of the agreement should be shared with SERB at the time of initiation of the project.

Deadline for submission of concept note/expression of interest to R&D Department –July 8, 2022, EoD. The project proposal in prescribed format or the concept note as the case may be, should be sent to Dean R&D (dean.research@ddn.upes.ac.in), with CC to Associate Dean (R&D) (smtauseef@ddn.upes.ac.in) well in time.
